Prodigy

Reede Kulmatycki. Remember that name.

Reede is a young man who has just published his first sci-fi/fantasy novel and has the sequel on the way. It's called Destiny The Severed Song of Arkan. I've just completed reading it and frankly, I was blown away. The story line is timeless, good against evil. but the plot grabs a hold of you and never lets go even to the last page. In the small village of Kaiyzen on the planet of Arkan, the Kren have invaded to mine the precious crystals that bring this place alive. In doing so they broke the Song of Arkan, the essence of life for the whole planet.

The Kren use the villagers to mine the crystals, breaking down the rock they are imbedded in. The machines that make the first huge cuts are monsters that spew sulphur, poisoning the atmosphere. In this stench barely walks a boy, Aren, who mines the crystals. It is back breaking work. There is very little food to eat and the Kren guards monitor the people for the merest of violations. That sets the scene.

I could go on and on about Aren's leaving of Kaiyzen, his journey and all the pitfalls of escaping the Kren, but that would tell too much. Instead, I will say that this book is riveting, brilliant, poignant, phenomenal, imaginative, intricate and alive with hope.
